Thanks for Supporting Thanksgiving Lunch

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to celebrate with our Silverbrook families. Thank you for coming out to our annual Thanksgiving lunch. Smiles, music, food, and fellowship were the words for the day. We enjoyed seeing every family. Thank you for your continued support of Silverbrook.

Calling all student entrepreneurs!

Registration for Silverbrook's Annual Winter Market on Friday, Dec. 6 is now OPEN! Students once again have the opportunity to showcase and sell their wares and creations. Set up will begin at 4:00pm in the cafeteria and the sale will run from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Register for ParentVUE Learn how to activate your ParentVUE account, so you can easily access your child’s results and other helpful information.

Family Traditions

As we come upon the holidays we would like you to invite you to share your family traditions! You may want to share aspects of a traditional meal, clothing, or activities you do during the holiday season. We have created a drop box that our whole community can access! You can drop your video there or watch a video of another family. We look forward to viewing aspects of the rich tapestry of families at Silverbrook.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Storybook Character Parade

Thank you for supporting our Storybook Character Parade. We had a BLAST!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means it might look different when you get your child’s progress report next month. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we're ensuring your child gets any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Coat Drive

"LCAC needs our help! Next week is the last week for our coat drive! Please drop off items by November 8th!"

Diwali (Friday, Nov. 1): We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. #OurFCPS

This week we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world. #OurFCPS

Costume Guidelines

Impact Aid Forms

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

IMPACT AID FORMS - The form is online in SIS ParentVUE to make it easier. You will need a SIS account to access the form.

  1. Once logged in to SIS ParentVUE, click “Online Packets” in the top right corner.
  2. Then, select “Federal Impact Aid Survey.”

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Find out how to get technical support for ParentVUE.

A Note from the Silverbrook Public Health Nurse

As the weather starts to change and those sniffles become more common, we’re seeing an uptick in illnesses around our school. Here are some proactive tips that can help keep our children healthy this season:

  1. Promote Good Respiratory Etiquette at Home Encourage your kids to cough into their elbows and dispose of used tissues properly. And of course, washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds! This should happen after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing their noses.
  2. Keep an Eye on Symptoms If your student isn’t feeling well, it’s a good idea to take their temperature. If it’s 100.4°F or higher, please keep them home. They can return to school when they’ve been fever-free without medication for 24 hours or 24 hours after vomiting/diarrhea has stopped.
  3. Reporting Absences When you report an absence, please share as much detail as possible about their symptoms. Instead of simply saying “sick” or “cold,” you might say “fever and cough” or “strep throat.” This information helps me track trends in the classrooms and respond effectively.
  4. Fresh Start After Illness If your child has been sick, remember to swap out their toothbrush and change their bedding. It’s a simple step that can help prevent the spread of germs.

Thank you for your support in keeping our Silverbrook students healthy this season! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected].

Take care and stay healthy! Melissa Ford Silverbrook Public Health Nurse
