Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit our website for attendance resources

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or counselor.

Would you like to help Silverbrook's school garden grow? We are looking for a few helping hands to volunteer with the school garden team. Activities will include weeding, mulching, and watering the school garden and other flower beds around the school. Volunteers are also needed to assist with garden related art projects.

Time Commitment: 1-5 hours per week; flexible schedule

Please email Karyn Hanchulak at [email protected] to schedule a garden orientation.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year. Silverbrook will screen all students this spring for subject specific and part time services.

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

For more detailed information please see the Spring AAP Newsletters:

Square 1 Art Deadline 04/12

PTO3 weeks 1 day ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

It's time for Square 1 Art!

Our seahawks in grades K, 2, 4, and 6 have worked hard, along with our awesome art teachers, to get some fantastic artwork completed for this fundraiser.  We have already shipped that artwork out, and you will have the chance to purchase some cool keepsakes with your child's artwork on it, such as tote bags, welcome flags, coffee mugs, etc. These items make great gifts. If you have a seahawk in grade K, 2, 4, or 6, keep an eye out for a catalog coming home SOON!

Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 can participate too!!!  Even siblings at home can participate.  Perhaps your student brought some cool artwork home earlier this year and you would like to make it into a lasting keepsake!  Anyone can create a work of art (or multiple works of art), upload it digitally at square1art.com and order awesome keepsakes!

While this is not a huge fundraiser for Silverbrook (we mainly do it because it's a neat way for us to turn our kids' artwork into cool stuff), our school DOES BENEFIT from every purchase!

Artwork done at home (or even something your student may have made previously) can be uploaded and ordered until April 12th

"Please note, while catalogs say the deadline is April 2nd, the deadline has been extended to April 12th!"

There are a few tips to consider while creating the best artwork for these keepsakes... check them out at Making Art with Square 1 Art.

https://www.square1art.com/

*Please note, all orders must be placed online, and Square 1 Art will only be using direct ship to your home address... items purchased will not be mailed to the school.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Renee Williams at [email protected].

Thank You PTO!

Last season a few members of our PTO Garden Commitee planted bulbs along the front of the grassy area of the school. Our flowers are beautiful.

GARDEN ART

Our students created beautiful pieces of art to add to our sensory garden.

Solar Eclipse Spirit Day

Seahawks are invited to wear Black and Yellow on Monday, April 8th in recognition of the solar eclipse day!! Please remind your child about the importance of wearing their solar eclipse glasses as we go out to view the phenomenon and as they dismiss at the end of the day.

Absences

Daily attendance is important for every student. As of today (April 4th), 7.1% of our student population is chronically absent. As you know absences impact student learning and socialization. We want and need our students in school every day. We will continue to reach out to parents to inquire if we can support them in any way.

3rd Grade Wax Museum

Our third-grade students did a fantastic job representing famous people from the past and present at their Wax Museum. They worked diligently on their projects and each one was ready to present interesting information on their selected person. We are so proud of our kids. Thank you, parents, for attending and a huge thank you to our teachers.

Solar Eclipse

Dear Silverbrook families,

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, requiring important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Silverbrook Elementary School, we have been able to collect approved eyewear from the U.S. National Science Foundation so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. We are offering glasses to all of our students to participate; however, if you prefer your child NOT to participate, let us know using this Google Form/ Formulario de Google by noon on Monday, April 8.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

College Funding Coach

Our session with the college funding coach was one not to miss! She provided our audience with great ideas on not only saving but finding how you can use someone else’s money!! We appreciate our counseling team for bringing this valuable information to our Seahawk families. Reach out to either of our counselors if you’d like more information.

Our 5th and 6th grade students had a blast exploring various occupational opportunities today during our Career Fair. We had approximately twenty-one volunteers come out to support this effort by expounding on their personal job and career choices. Thank you to our wonderful counseling team for spearheading this.

April is Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. Let’s all PURPLE UP on April 17 in support of our military children.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact Dr. Simpkins or Mr. Martinez (Family Liaison) regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms or, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined by the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Safe, Supported, and Included — the FCPS Family Summit 2024

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association.

This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan. More details will be available after spring break.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third  grade.

Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is a day of mourning. During special Good Friday services Christians meditate on Jesus's suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith. Read more at Britannica.com

Easter

A joyful Easter to all in our community who celebrate! This year's Easter artwork was created by Falls Church High School student Dayanara M. The springtime celebration of Easter is the most important Christian holiday. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, who sacrificed so that Christians may have life with God after death. #OurFCPS This artwork was designed as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students.   ARTiFACTS Newsletter

Dear Silverbrook Families,

Please mark your calendar for Silverbrook’ s Annual Art Gala: A Walk in the Woods: An Enchanted Evening of Art.

The Gala will take place on the evening of Monday, May 6, 2024, from 6-8pm in our cafeteria. This is a free event that will feature artwork from each class and will have activities and a photo booth. We would like to invite your family and friends to attend our Art Gala. We are looking forward to a fun filled art evening. Feel free to attend for any time frame during the Gala.

Due to the large number of children that attend our school, nine students’ artwork will be chosen to represent each class. Artwork will be voted on anonymously by peers who have completed a similar project and are aware of the expectations of what went into the project.

If your child’s artwork is selected to be in the Art Gala, he/she will receive a letter to notify him/her at least two weeks prior to the Gala. Even if your child’s artwork is not selected, we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the Gala. The event is always a huge success!

Large events such as this do take a lot of preparation and planning. If you would be willing to share some of your time with us, we would greatly appreciate your help in planning for the evening or preparing artwork with us! A huge thank you to the many wonderful volunteers that have been in to help prepare materials this school year! We continue to need help preparing materials, mounting artwork, and preparing decorations.

Please click this link to sign up for volunteer opportunities: SIGNUPGENIUS

If you have any questions about the Art Gala, please feel free to contact either of us. We can best be reached through e-mail.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Laura Lajin [email protected]    Elke Whittle [email protected]

Spirit Week 03/18-3/22 International Night

Our International Night was a BLAST!! A huge thanks to all of our parents and teachers who created awe inspiring tables representing their home country. We appreciate the efforts of our PTO parents under the direction of Ms. Emilee Miles.

THANK YOU!

Reminder: Ramadan

PTO1 month 2 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents/Guardians, As we have entered the Ramadan season, we are providing an opportunity for students who observe Ramadan to fast and pray in a dedicated space in the school library. It has come to our attention that some students are misbehaving and being disruptive during this time, instead of engaging in silent reflection and prayer.

We kindly ask your support in reminding your child to come to the library on time, bring a book or writing assignment, and remain quiet and respectful. We also ask that students wear appropriate clothing for prayer. Additionally, please keep in mind that students who do not observe Ramadan will not be able to sit with friends who are fasting.

Thank you in advance for your support. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Pamela Simpkins Principal
