First Day of School

We had a fantastic first day of school. Students were engaged in building community and learning the new routines and procedures. They loved being back at school and enjoyed seeing their friends. Our building is alive with fun and learning!

Patience Please

As we embark on the new year, we are reteaching routines and procedures. We ask for your patience as students relearn processes. The first few days of school require a little more time for dismissal and moving through school.

Early Release Mondays

Please let us know your needs for early release Mondays. Use this QR code to submit your responses.

Arrival Procedures

Parents are invited to walk their children to the classroom on Wednesday.

  • Bus students will deboard and go straight to their classrooms.
  • Walker students should enter Door 12 and go to their classroom. If they arrive before 8:40 they will sit in the gym until the bell has rung. Kindergarten students are escorted by their instruction assistant.

Kiss and Ride students will exit their car and enter the gym. If they arrive before 8:40 they will sit in the gym until the bell has rung. Kindergarten students are escorted by their instructional assistant.

Dismissal Procedures
  • Bus students will be called to their bus after the bus has arrived at school. Until then, they remain in the classroom. Please encourage your child to walk directly to the bus loop when they are dismissed from class. Kindergarten students who ride the bus in the afternoon are to be met at the bus door and asked for by name by a parent, parent designee, guardian, or a responsible middle school-age or older sibling. Children will be returned to school if the driver has concerns for their safety.
  • Walker students are dismissed from Door 12. All kindergarten walkers must be met by an adult or middle school or older parent or designee. Students in grades 1-6 are free to walk themselves, and we are looking closely to match our first-grade students with their designated adult, older siblings can walk with younger siblings’ home (first-sixth grades).

Kiss and Ride students are housed in the gym until their car number is called. It would be helpful to the overall Kiss and Ride dismissal process if you stay in your car as students and adults learn the routine. The first few are always slower. We appreciate your patience.

Strategies Lab Parent Volunteers Needed

Can you offer a gift of time on Friday mornings? Strategies Lab begins next month! The strategies lab is a learning environment that develops critical habits of mind and thinking behaviors. The Lab also promotes risk-taking, social learning, and character development. The hands-on board games, puzzles, and brain activities used in the strategies lab not only improve sensory-motor and visual-spatial skills but also foster higher-level thinking abilities like questioning, problem solving, abstract reasoning, and ingenuity. Volunteers are needed to assist classroom teachers and to set-up, clean-up, and prepare the lab for the next class of students. Volunteers also assist with monitoring the activities and helping students learn the rules. The strategies lab is a great place to volunteer. Please reach out to Lauren McGovern with interest or questions at [email protected].

    Former Silverbrook Students Visit

The former Seahawks took their last walk “literally” through Silverbrook this week. These former students will graduate from South County High School on Monday. They were astonished at how much Silverbrook has changed over the years. Tears and jubilation were the emotions during this moment.

    Have a Wonderful Summer

On behalf of the administrators, staff, and faculty of Silverbrook we wish each of our students a safe and fun summer. We look forward to seeing our Seahawks back in August.

    Pyramid Art Show

Our students’ artistic talents were displayed at the South County Pyramid Art Show last weekend. We are so proud of our K-6th grade students whose work was selected. Thank you, Ms. Lajin and Ms. Whittle, for your belief in our young artists.

    News From the Health Room

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on or before the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

If you have any questions, please contact your School Public Health Nurse, Melissa Ford, at 571-460-9749.

School Board Votes to Adopt Fiscal Year 2025 Approved Budget

The Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Approved Budget at their last board meeting. The FY 2025 Approved Budget totals $3.7 billion — a net increase of $233.2 million or 6.6% over the previous year.

The FY 2025 Approved Budget focuses on providing educational excellence for all students and ensuring that employees’ hard work and dedication are acknowledged through competitive compensation. Both of these efforts fully align with the FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Nearly 86% of the Approved Budget is targeted at instruction. Key budget highlights include funding for a 4% compensation increase for all employees; maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students; and expanding athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.

Class Placement for 2024-25 School Year

As the end of the school year approaches one of our important tasks is to determine class placements for the following year. The school staff works collaboratively to plan teacher and student assignments. A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, gender, and academics are considered as we create new classes.

Silverbrook families have an option to assist in placements by providing insights about their child(ren). Please note the following restrictions:

    • We will not accept requests for specific teachers. This includes hints to referencing teachers or emailing your child’s teacher with a request directly. Please include characteristics of a teacher that would be a good fit for your child(ren).
    • Input must be submitted by the deadline, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to be considered. We will not accept late requests; we need time to process and confer with grade-level teams.
    • We cannot guarantee friend requests. While it’s helpful for us to share some names of close friends, we defer to the placement team on placements and cannot guarantee friend requests.
    • Keep in mind that placement decisions are made with your student and their strengths in mind. We purpose to create classes that are as balanced as possible considering what we know about the students we serve.

The deadline for any correspondence regarding the upcoming school year (2024-2025) is Wednesday, May 29, 2024, please complete this form.
