Silverbrook’s Proud Marathoner

Our strings teacher Mr. Mondoloka, ran his first Virginia 26.2-mile marathon last weekend. We share in his joy of accomplishment.

Eid al-Fitr, also known as small Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims congregate that morning for Eid prayers. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The most common way to wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr is Eid Mubarak, which means “blessed feast” (or festival)

Student Intentions for 2025-26 School Year

Although we want to keep all of our Seahawks for the coming year, we understand that some families may transition. Please access this intention form to let us know if your student is staying or transitioning from Silverbrook.

School Start Times Survey

Last year, FCPS held community forums and surveyed middle school families regarding middle school start times. Now, we would like to hear from all staff and families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. The goal remains to begin middle school at 8 a.m. or later at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

On April 1, a survey link will be sent by email to staff, parents/caregivers, and students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open for two weeks and will be available in multiple languages.

Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid

Your voice matters, and Superintendent Reid wants to hear from you! Share your thoughts and ask questions regarding FCPS on Tuesday, April 1, Lorton Station Elementary School from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Click on a date to register. Registration is not required but is encouraged for planning purposes.

Childcare and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Find out about other opportunities to connect with Dr. Reid

Exciting news! SoCo Summer Strings is returning this Summer!

The camp will be hosted at South County Middle School from July 7-18, 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM (weekdays only). Camp is open to all rising 5th-9th grade students with at least one year of experience on the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will participate in two large ensemble rehearsals, an instrument-specific technique class, and a sectional each day.

You can find more information and register for camp at www.schsorchestra.org/soco-summer-strings. Register early to save money and reserve your student’s spot!

Student Safety and Dismissal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of all students during arrival and dismissal, we ask for your cooperation. Please encourage your child to use the crosswalks staffed by a crossing guard to cross safely.

For dismissal:

  • Walkers will exit through Door 12.
  • Kiss and Ride students will depart from Door 11.

We kindly ask parents picking up students by car to follow the Kiss and Ride line to ensure an orderly and efficient dismissal process. Our FCPS Security team will be present to assist with monitoring and ensuring the smooth flow of students.

Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping our students safe.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year. Silverbrook will screen all students for subject specific and part-time services this spring.

Screening Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Student Intentions for 2025-26 School Year

Although we want to keep all of our Seahawks for the coming year, we understand that some families may transition. Please access this intention form to let us know if your student is staying or transitioning from Silverbrook.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, between January and April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us prepare and ensure we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage.

As a reminder, registration will not occur during orientation but at a scheduled time with our Registrar.  Please https://tinyurl.com/3kvnk6xk to reserve a day/time to register your child with our Registrar, Renita Priestley.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage.

Reminder to Sign Up Weekly for Student Fasting Meal Kits

Students fasting during the school day between now and March 28 can take school meal kits home at the end of the day. Families must fill out a separate request form for each week and each student to receive school meal kits. To receive meal kits for the week of March 24, please fill out this form by March 17.

Please remind your child to pick up their meals daily at our school’s designated location. Visit the Food and Nutrition Services webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.

Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be

used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop-arm violation”).

Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.

According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.

We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

Kinder Pick Up

Parents and guardians, it is critically important that your kindergarten student is picked up from the bus by an adult or sibling, middle school age or older. Similarly, kindergarten walkers must be met at the gym door by an adult or sibling of middle school age or older.

Read Across America Week

We had a wonderful time during Read Across America Week. Our students read over 2,500 books!! We are looking forward to going beyond this baseline next year.

Author Ms. Charlotte Avery

Our students enjoyed seeing and interacting with Ms. Charlotte Avery (author and publisher)! She read aloud Afro Izzy which spoke to reaffirming our inner selves and worth. Our students had a blast with her!!

Student Voice with Food and Nutrition Services

Exciting Tasting Experience with FCPS Food and Nutrition Services

Ten of our fabulous students recently had the opportunity to taste a variety of different foods that may be featured on the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services Breakfast and Lunch menu for the upcoming school year. Not only did we enjoy sampling these items, but we also had a wonderful time learning more about the ingredients and the preparation behind each dish. It was great exploring some delicious possibilities for the future!

Indoor Dining

We are extending an invitation for parents to come in to have lunch with their child. Please use this form to sign up for a time. Lunch will be consumed in the SACC room on Mondays and Wednesdays until our weather is consistently warm enough to open outdoor dining.

We are excited to extend an invitation for parents to join their child for lunch! To ensure everyone has a chance to participate, please use the form below to sign up for a time. Lunch will take place in the SACC room on Mondays and Wednesdays until the weather is warm enough to open outdoor dining. Please use this form to sign up for a time.

Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan

Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.

The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.

Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that aligns with evidence-based literacy instruction. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.

Discover how an elementary school employs a science-based approach, including phonics, to supercharge students' reading.

Learn more about the FCPS FY 2026 Advertised Budget. View the Budget Development Calendar to stay up to date.

Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

For more information, see the Summer Learning page.

VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Become Unskippable: Practical Guidance for Talking With Teens About Fentanyl

Teens skip things that don't interest them, including lectures from their parents. But young people die from fentanyl overdoses in Fairfax County each year — so it's important to have short, impactful talks with your teen, whether or not you think they’re at risk.

As a parent or caregiver, you have the power to become “unskippable” and talk with your teen in a way they will listen.

See our tips for talking with your teen about fentanyl and other difficult subjects. Watch this video to learn more about becoming unskippable.

Art-Quatic

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Silverbrook is happy to celebrate our Annual Art Gala this Spring. This year, all students in kindergarten through sixth grade will be featured. Due to the number of students, there will be two Galas:  April 7, 2005, will feature grades K, 2, 4, and 6. May 5, 2025, will feature grades 1, 3, and 5. Please view our Gala flyer to learn more.

The number of students featured is more than doubled from last year and we need your help to ensure a successful Gala. We believe that success will continue to be possible with the hard work and determination of the students, their art teachers, and the many volunteers who will assist with the preparations, set up and take down of the Gala. The Gala is a one-day event–everything must be completed in a few short hours. This is a huge amount of work! We could not do it without the help of volunteers. If you can help us in any of the following capacities, please visit our Sign-up Genius link to volunteer.

Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

Reminder: Around the World Night Tonight at 6 PM  Clinic Reminders

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are seeing an increase in illnesses (such as flu, strep throat, and vomiting) at our school.

Here are some helpful tips to keep our children healthy this season:

  • Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Disinfect High Touch Surfaces: Regularly cleaning surfaces like doorknobs, counters, and electronics can help prevent the spread of germs throughout your home.
  • Monitor for symptoms:  Take their temperature, if your child is not feeling well. If it is 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, please keep them home from school. They can return when they have been fever-free for 24 hours without medication, or 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea has stopped.
  • Report absences with details: When reporting an absence, please provide as much detail as possible about your child's symptoms. Instead of simply saying "sick" or "cold," you might say "fever and cough" or "strep throat." This information helps me track trends in the classrooms and respond accordingly.
  • Fresh start after illness: If your child has been sick, remember to disinfect surfaces they may have touched and wash their belongings, such as toys and stuffed animals. You should also swap out their toothbrush and change their bedding to prevent the spread of germs.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our Silverbrook students healthy! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Melissa Ford, Silverbrook Public Health Nurse

SEL Spring Screener Participation - Notice of Survey for Grades 3-6, Window March 10th – March 28th

Social and Emotional Learning Screening:

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.

The SEL Screener elevates the voices of our students by making sure their perspectives are considered in decision-making. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. Division and school level results, which do not include individual student information, may be used by staff to improve SEL and mental wellness practices and to inform strategic plans. Division and school level results may also be shared with the community to describe the needs of our student body and provide opportunities for partnership.

Individual students’ Screener data will only be accessible to teachers, administrators, and staff with legitimate educational interests. Results will be maintained in secure files and databases accessible only to these individuals. In partnership with families, staff review this data alongside other information to plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window. School staff are available to discuss results with families.

If you would like, you can opt out your child from participating in the SEL Screener by completing the form below or complete the opt out through your parent SIS account. If you already completed an opt out for the fall window, you do not need to complete it again. The opt out applies to the current school year and must be completed annually. For more information about the SEL Screener and access to its contents visit https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

Visit Fairfax County’s website for Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our family liaison, Mr. Eber Martinez, at [email protected]. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

2025 WINTER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Registration for Winter After School Programs opens TODAY at NOON! See below for details on the schedule and available offerings.

We strongly recommend using Chrome or Firefox to register for programs. We do not recommend using a government computer or Internet Explorer.

Also, it is helpful to create an account ahead of time if you haven’t registered for a program in the past. Some of the classes fill up quickly, so this will save you some time when registration opens.

Click on the link to read program descriptions; set up your account, and register! https://bc-ffx-silverbrook.jumbula.com/

Happy Registering!

Family Math Week

MIND Research is hosting family math week from January 13 - January 17. During that time, students are encouraged to log onto the FCPS Family Math website to engage in math activities with their families at home that include stories with mathematical concepts connected to a variety of different math games from around the world. All activities are available in English and Spanish.

To learn more about Family Math Nights check out this video. We hope that all schools will help spread the word and work collaboratively to help us reach our goal of logging on for three million minutes as an FCPS community.

Information will be available through the Elementary Schoology groups for teachers to easily copy over information and links for students to access to participate with their families during math week in the New Year.

Our school goal is to read 75,000 books by March 2nd. Can we, do it?? Yes, we can! Return your completed Record Sheet to Ms. Lanier, please complete the front and back.
