Class Placement for 2024-25 School Year

As the end of the school year approaches, one of our important tasks is to determine class placements for the following year. The school staff works collaboratively to plan teacher and student assignments. A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, gender, and academics are considered as we create new classes.

Silverbrook families have the option to assist in placements by providing insights about their child(ren). Please note the following restrictions:

  • We will not accept requests for specific teachers. This includes hints to referencing teachers or emailing your child’s teacher with a request directly.
  • Please include characteristics of a teacher that would be a good fit for your child(ren).
  • Input must be submitted by the deadline, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to be considered. We will not accept late requests, as we need time to process and confer with grade level teams.
  • We cannot guarantee friend requests. While it’s helpful for us to share some names of close friends, we defer to the placement team on placements and cannot guarantee friend requests.
  • Keep in mind, that placement decisions are made with your student and their individual strengths in mind. We purpose to create classes that are as balanced as possible considering what we know about the students we serve.

SmartWatches

Parents and guardians, please help us by encouraging your child to not access smartwatches to converse during instructional time. This is becoming a growing issue throughout our school. Please leave a message at the office if you need to contact your child for an emergency. We will get the message to them. During SOL's smartwatches will be removed and students will reclaim them after the test. It is suggested that students leave their watches at home. Thank you for your support.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or counselor.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year. Silverbrook will screen all students this spring for subject specific and part time services.

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Square 1 Art Deadline 04/12

GovDelivery1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

It's time for Square 1 Art!

Our seahawks in grades K, 2, 4, and 6 have worked hard, along with our awesome art teachers, to get some fantastic artwork completed for this fundraiser.  We have already shipped that artwork out, and you will have the chance to purchase some cool keepsakes with your child's artwork on it, such as tote bags, welcome flags, coffee mugs, etc. These items make great gifts. If you have a seahawk in grade K, 2, 4, or 6, keep an eye out for a catalog coming home SOON!

Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 can participate too!!!  Even siblings at home can participate.  Perhaps your student brought some cool artwork home earlier this year and you would like to make it into a lasting keepsake!  Anyone can create a work of art (or multiple works of art), upload it digitally at square1art.com and order awesome keepsakes!

While this is not a huge fundraiser for Silverbrook (we mainly do it because it's a neat way for us to turn our kids' artwork into cool stuff), our school DOES BENEFIT from every purchase!

Artwork done at home (or even something your student may have made previously) can be uploaded and ordered until April 12th

"Please note, while catalogs say the deadline is April 2nd, the deadline has been extended to April 12th!"

There are a few tips to consider while creating the best artwork for these keepsakes... check them out at Making Art with Square 1 Art.

https://www.square1art.com/

*Please note, all orders must be placed online, and Square 1 Art will only be using direct ship to your home address... items purchased will not be mailed to the school.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Renee Williams at [email protected].

Kindergarten Orientation

We hosted approximately eighty families during our Kindergarten Orientation. Our new Seahawks will be South County’s graduating class of 2037! We’re looking forward to seeing all our Seahawks in August.

Student Intentions for Next Year

As we plan teacher staffing for the next school year 2024-2025, we need your help to determine our enrollment numbers.  Staffing is based on enrollment and state regulations require we determine the educational intentions of students leaving Silverbrook. If you are moving from the area, please complete this Student Intention for Next School Year 2024-2025 to let us know of your intentions. Should you have any questions please contact Renita Priestley at [email protected]

Thank You PTO!

Last season a few members of our PTO Garden Commitee planted bulbs along the front of the grassy area of the school. Our flowers are beautiful.

GARDEN ART

Our students created beautiful pieces of art to add to our sensory garden.

Solar Eclipse Spirit Day

Seahawks are invited to wear Black and Yellow on Monday, April 8th in recognition of the solar eclipse day!! Please remind your child about the importance of wearing their solar eclipse glasses as we go out to view the phenomenon and as they dismiss at the end of the day.

Absences

Daily attendance is important for every student. As of today (April 4th), 7.1% of our student population is chronically absent. As you know absences impact student learning and socialization. We want and need our students in school every day. We will continue to reach out to parents to inquire if we can support them in any way.

3rd Grade Wax Museum

Our third-grade students did a fantastic job representing famous people from the past and present at their Wax Museum. They worked diligently on their projects and each one was ready to present interesting information on their selected person. We are so proud of our kids. Thank you, parents, for attending and a huge thank you to our teachers.

Solar Eclipse

Dear Silverbrook families,

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, requiring important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Silverbrook Elementary School, we have been able to collect approved eyewear from the U.S. National Science Foundation so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. We are offering glasses to all of our students to participate; however, if you prefer your child NOT to participate, let us know using this Google Form/ Formulario de Google by noon on Monday, April 8.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.
