Impact Aid Coming Soon

More information will follow. Please be sure to sign in to your SIS ParentVUE account to complete this important survey.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible for federal Impact Aid grants due to the federal presence in our area. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget. They are critical to ensuring that students receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $3,000,000 in Impact Aid funds.

FCPS uses the survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students. In October, the survey will be made available to FCPS families. The survey is available online through ParentVue. Families without ParentVUE can request a paper copy of the survey from their child's school. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality.

Below are the visual steps for a parent to get to the survey in SIS ParentVue.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus.

Silverbrook Families,

HAPPY FALL! We are so excited to be working with your children in Art and STEAM! They are making connections, creating, problem solving and collaborating in our classes. We have two Art/STEAM teachers at Silverbrook who love working with your children!

Mrs. Lajin is starting her 22nd year of teaching and her 18th year at Silverbrook. She is originally from Wisconsin. Mrs. Lajin received her master’s with an emphasis in STEAM from Clemson in December 2020. She loves to spend time with her boys Cullen and Lennox. She also enjoys drinking coffee, reading, calligraphy and baking.

Mrs. Whittle is from Germany and has taught abroad. She has lived in multiple countries and has been an architect. This will be her 12th year teaching art and 5th year at Silverbrook. She loves to spend time with her family and her three children, Anna, Zoe and Sam. She also likes traveling, hiking, reading, and making art.

Our rooms are bustling with creativity. We started the year by working on routines and making personal connections through our artwork. Mrs. Lajin’s classes are currently working with Ms. Lauren Ottignon through October 11th. Ms. Ottignon is a student at George Mason and is doing her teaching internship with Silverbrook. She is a former Silverbrook student and has her BA in illustration from MICA. She will be moving to Hayfield Secondary after her time with us.

We love the help of volunteers for the numerous materials we prep. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit our sign-up link for opportunities or scan our QR Code at the end of this message.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Seahawk Talk

Our first Seahawk Talk focused on Resiliency in students. There are six resiliency builders that are beneficial for children. Read below for the first three skill builders. The remaining three will be sent next week.

The Six Resiliency Builders

 1. Provide Caring and Support

Give youth unconditional positive regard, kindness, love and encouragement. Celebrate their successes and foster a sense of community belonging. Above all else, all youth need a significant relationship with at least one caring, positive adult.

Here are some ideas on how to provide caring and support:

  • Ensure that youth have a positive bond with at least one caring, trusted, and supportive adult; seek out a mentor
  • Create a welcoming environment
  • Provide kindness and encouragement
  • Identify specific strengths in youth and name them specifically
  • Build in opportunities for personal discussion
  • Provide a good listening ear without judgment
  • Celebrate successes
  1. Set and Communicate High, Realistic Expectations

Communicate to youth the belief that they can be successful. Support and encourage goal-setting for educational and vocational endeavors that reflect positive thinking and belief in oneself.

Here are some ideas on how to set and communicate high, realistic expectations:

  • Tell youth you believe in them and foster a “can do” attitude
  • Help youth set attainable goals and strive for mastery
  • Nurture a positive self-esteem
  • Praise the efforts of youth; recognize improvements
  • Encourage and support youth in trying new challenges
  • Emphasize cooperation over competition
  • Help youth plan for future educational and vocational success
  1. Provide Opportunities for Meaningful Participation

Provide youth with the responsibility and chance to demonstrate their competence and eagerness to contribute and give back to others. Allow them leadership roles and opportunities to collaborate in decision-making.

Here are some ideas on how to provide opportunities for meaningful participation:

  • Get youth involved in community service and volunteer opportunities
  • Tackle a shared service learning project
  • Share responsibilities
  • Provide opportunities for leadership roles

Good afternoon Silverbrook Community,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mr. Abner Mondoloka and I am the new Silverbrook strings teacher. I am excited to be here and to get to know all your children. Band and Strings has decided to extend the due date of enrollment forms, so your child still has the option of signing up for Band or Strings.

Band (5th and 6th grade ONLY)

Strings (4th, 5th, and 6th grades)

A little background about myself, I am a graduate of the College of William and Mary, and I am also in the Army Reserves Band. My primary instrument is the viola, but I also love to teach violin, cello, and bass. I will be starting to measure students this week and next week to give you the appropriate size of the instrument to rent and play.

Please sign your child up for Band or Strings by Tuesday, September 10 by using the QR code provided. Band and Strings will start classes during the week of September 16th. Your child will be scheduled for one of the mornings Monday through Friday and we will be in touch on this specific day and time.

If you have any questions about Band or Strings, please don’t hesitate to email us.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation: Grades K-6 – Identified students receive AAP curriculum lessons in the general education setting in areas of academic strength.

Part-Time Services: Grades 3-6 – Identified students receive AAP curriculum lessons in more than one academic content area. The Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) leads these lessons. Programming has increased depth and complexity in several content areas.

Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

First Day of School

We had a fantastic first day of school. Students were engaged in building community and learning the new routines and procedures. They loved being back at school and enjoyed seeing their friends. Our building is alive with fun and learning!

Patience Please

As we embark on the new year, we are reteaching routines and procedures. We ask for your patience as students relearn processes. The first few days of school require a little more time for dismissal and moving through school.

Early Release Mondays

Please let us know your needs for early release Mondays. Use this QR code to submit your responses.

Arrival Procedures

Parents are invited to walk their children to the classroom on Wednesday.

  • Bus students will deboard and go straight to their classrooms.
  • Walker students should enter Door 12 and go to their classroom. If they arrive before 8:40 they will sit in the gym until the bell has rung. Kindergarten students are escorted by their instruction assistant.

Kiss and Ride students will exit their car and enter the gym. If they arrive before 8:40 they will sit in the gym until the bell has rung. Kindergarten students are escorted by their instructional assistant.

Dismissal Procedures
  • Bus students will be called to their bus after the bus has arrived at school. Until then, they remain in the classroom. Please encourage your child to walk directly to the bus loop when they are dismissed from class. Kindergarten students who ride the bus in the afternoon are to be met at the bus door and asked for by name by a parent, parent designee, guardian, or a responsible middle school-age or older sibling. Children will be returned to school if the driver has concerns for their safety.
  • Walker students are dismissed from Door 12. All kindergarten walkers must be met by an adult or middle school or older parent or designee. Students in grades 1-6 are free to walk themselves, and we are looking closely to match our first-grade students with their designated adult, older siblings can walk with younger siblings’ home (first-sixth grades).

Kiss and Ride students are housed in the gym until their car number is called. It would be helpful to the overall Kiss and Ride dismissal process if you stay in your car as students and adults learn the routine. The first few are always slower. We appreciate your patience.

Strategies Lab Parent Volunteers Needed

Can you offer a gift of time on Friday mornings? Strategies Lab begins next month! The strategies lab is a learning environment that develops critical habits of mind and thinking behaviors. The Lab also promotes risk-taking, social learning, and character development. The hands-on board games, puzzles, and brain activities used in the strategies lab not only improve sensory-motor and visual-spatial skills but also foster higher-level thinking abilities like questioning, problem solving, abstract reasoning, and ingenuity. Volunteers are needed to assist classroom teachers and to set-up, clean-up, and prepare the lab for the next class of students. Volunteers also assist with monitoring the activities and helping students learn the rules. The strategies lab is a great place to volunteer. Please reach out to Lauren McGovern with interest or questions at [email protected].

    Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar Renita Priestley if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

    Update Your Contact Information

To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

    Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded.

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website
