College Funding Coach

Our session with the college funding coach was one not to miss! She provided our audience with great ideas on not only saving but finding how you can use someone else’s money!! We appreciate our counseling team for bringing this valuable information to our Seahawk families. Reach out to either of our counselors if you’d like more information.

Our 5th and 6th grade students had a blast exploring various occupational opportunities today during our Career Fair. We had approximately twenty-one volunteers come out to support this effort by expounding on their personal job and career choices. Thank you to our wonderful counseling team for spearheading this.

April is Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. Let’s all PURPLE UP on April 17 in support of our military children.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact Dr. Simpkins or Mr. Martinez (Family Liaison) regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

______________________________________________________________

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms or, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined by the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Safe, Supported, and Included — the FCPS Family Summit 2024

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association.

This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan. More details will be available after spring break.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third  grade.

Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is a day of mourning. During special Good Friday services Christians meditate on Jesus's suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith. Read more at Britannica.com

Easter

A joyful Easter to all in our community who celebrate! This year's Easter artwork was created by Falls Church High School student Dayanara M. The springtime celebration of Easter is the most important Christian holiday. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, who sacrificed so that Christians may have life with God after death. #OurFCPS This artwork was designed as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students.   ARTiFACTS Newsletter

Dear Silverbrook Families,

Please mark your calendar for Silverbrook’ s Annual Art Gala: A Walk in the Woods: An Enchanted Evening of Art.

The Gala will take place on the evening of Monday, May 6, 2024, from 6-8pm in our cafeteria. This is a free event that will feature artwork from each class and will have activities and a photo booth. We would like to invite your family and friends to attend our Art Gala. We are looking forward to a fun filled art evening. Feel free to attend for any time frame during the Gala.

Due to the large number of children that attend our school, nine students’ artwork will be chosen to represent each class. Artwork will be voted on anonymously by peers who have completed a similar project and are aware of the expectations of what went into the project.

If your child’s artwork is selected to be in the Art Gala, he/she will receive a letter to notify him/her at least two weeks prior to the Gala. Even if your child’s artwork is not selected, we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the Gala. The event is always a huge success!

Large events such as this do take a lot of preparation and planning. If you would be willing to share some of your time with us, we would greatly appreciate your help in planning for the evening or preparing artwork with us! A huge thank you to the many wonderful volunteers that have been in to help prepare materials this school year! We continue to need help preparing materials, mounting artwork, and preparing decorations.

Please click this link to sign up for volunteer opportunities: SIGNUPGENIUS

If you have any questions about the Art Gala, please feel free to contact either of us. We can best be reached through e-mail.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Spirit Week 03/18-3/22 International Night

Our International Night was a BLAST!! A huge thanks to all of our parents and teachers who created awe inspiring tables representing their home country. We appreciate the efforts of our PTO parents under the direction of Ms. Emilee Miles.

It's time for Square 1 Art!

Our seahawks in grades K, 2, 4, and 6 have worked hard, along with our awesome art teachers, to get some fantastic artwork completed for this fundraiser.  We have already shipped that artwork out, and you will have the chance to purchase some cool keepsakes with your child's artwork on it, such as tote bags, welcome flags, coffee mugs, etc. These items make great gifts. If you have a seahawk in grade K, 2, 4, or 6, keep an eye out for a catalog coming home SOON!

Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 can participate too!!!  Even siblings at home can participate.  Perhaps your student brought some cool artwork home earlier this year and you would like to make it into a lasting keepsake!  Anyone can create a work of art (or multiple works of art), upload it digitally at square1art.com and order awesome keepsakes!

While this is not a huge fundraiser for Silverbrook (we mainly do it because it's a neat way for us to turn our kids' artwork into cool stuff), our school DOES BENEFIT from every purchase!

Artwork done at home (or even something your student may have made previously) can be uploaded and ordered until April 12th

"Please note, while catalogs say the deadline is April 2nd, the deadline has been extended to April 12th!"

There are a few tips to consider while creating the best artwork for these keepsakes... check them out at Making Art with Square 1 Art.

https://www.square1art.com/

*Please note, all orders must be placed online, and Square 1 Art will only be using direct ship to your home address... items purchased will not be mailed to the school.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Renee Williams at [email protected].  THANK YOU!

Elementary Institute for the Arts

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Reminder: Ramadan

PTO2 months 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents/Guardians, As we have entered the Ramadan season, we are providing an opportunity for students who observe Ramadan to fast and pray in a dedicated space in the school library. It has come to our attention that some students are misbehaving and being disruptive during this time, instead of engaging in silent reflection and prayer.

We kindly ask your support in reminding your child to come to the library on time, bring a book or writing assignment, and remain quiet and respectful. We also ask that students wear appropriate clothing for prayer. Additionally, please keep in mind that students who do not observe Ramadan will not be able to sit with friends who are fasting.

Thank you in advance for your support. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Pamela Simpkins Principal

Ramadan

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We would like to know if your child will participate in fasting and prayer during Ramadan. Please fill this form by Friday, March 8, so we can make appropriate accommodations for them.

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar. Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact Dr. Simpkins regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

We know our families enjoy having lunch with their child. We are opening our indoor dining and lunch will be in our SACC room. We need the total cooperation of all our families so this can be a successful and comfortable experience.

We are accommodating indoor lunch on Monday and Wednesday with limited seating. The SACC room is not available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Use this link to sign up for a time, and please be considerate of our limited space and the volume of families that would like to have lunch with their child. We’d like to ensure that as many families as possible have the opportunity.

  • Indoor lunch on Monday and Wednesday ONLY
  • We cannot accommodate family lunch in the café.
  • Be considerate when signing up to ensure as many parents can be accommodated as possible. Reserve one space per person (two-person limit per family).
  • It is the responsibility of the families to clean their space (with wipes) and place all trash in receptacle.
  • When you arrive for your scheduled lunch, sign in at office and go to the SACC room; we will retrieve your student and bring him/her to the SACC room. After lunch, please bring your student to the office and we will get them connected to their class. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
  Kindergarten Registration and Orientation

Calling all parents of our five-year-old Seahawks! You are invited to join us for Kindergarten Registration and Orientation on April 2, 2024, at 2:30. Come learn a little about the kindergarten curriculum, our students will have an opportunity to go to class and become familiar with a classroom, and parents will work on registering students for the coming year. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to get to know other kindergarten parents and their child.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

_______________________________________________________________

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources

¡Asiste a Clases Hoy Para Tener Éxito Mañana!

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

Take the Family Engagement Survey!

We are accommodating indoor lunch on Monday and Wednesday in our SACC room (with limited seating). The SACC room is not available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Use this link to sign up for a time, and please be considerate of our limited space and the volume of families that would like to have lunch with their children. We’d like to ensure that as many families as possible have the opportunity.

Lunch Link

  • Indoor lunch on Monday and Wednesday ONLY
  • We cannot accommodate family lunch in the café.
  • Be considerate when signing up to ensure as many parents can be accommodated as possible.
  • It is the responsibility of the families to clean their space (with wipes) and place all trash in receptacles.
  • When you arrive for your scheduled lunch, sign in at the office and go to the SACC room; we will retrieve your student and bring him/her to the SACC room.
